Feest!

Vandaag feest natuurlijk!

Ooit werkte ik eens aan de Hereweg in Groningen. Wat ik niet wist, is dat achter de kantoorkolos nog een stukje was te zien van de Helperlinie. Van de linie is zelf weinig meer over, maar hij werd op aanwijzing van Coehoorn gebouwd om herhaling van 1672 te voorkomen. Today is celebration time, as we celebrate the relief of Groningen in 1672.

To prevent a siege, in 1695, under the guidance of the great Coehoorn, a new defense line was made, just about at the place where the Bishop started his siege. I used to work on the modern day office buildings, and I only realised a few years ago, that in the backyard the remains of the line could be seen. The photograph dates from 1668 and shows the eastern redoubt.
