Sententie van Grisperre ~ Sentence

Sententie van den Hoogen Chrijghs-rade der Vereenighde Nederlanden, jegens den heere Louys Francoys baron de Grisperre. Van de website Tempo, Knuttel 108751.

Mortepayen wil zeggen het opvoeren van niet bestaande soldaten in je compagnie. In dit geval kostte het de beste man zijn hoofd. De krijgsraad bestond uit de Heren Sedlenitsky, Goltstijn, Beaumont, Lehndorf, Ringenbergh en Buijs met de rang colonel, de kapiteins Vijgh en Steelandt en sergeant majoor Weevoort. Het gaat om dit regiment.



In an earlier post I mentioned that Colonel Jorman's regiment was dissolved for financial malpractice. Colonel Grisperre was not so lucky: he was accused of mortepayen, claiming to have full companies and it was found out he hadn't. He was beheaded on the 13th of November 1673.

The above text is a pamphlet, found on Tempo, proclaiming the death sentence on Stensel Thiedeman, from Lithuania, who killed and robbed his landlady Maertje Leenders, in the town of Vlaardingen. His head was cut off, his body and limbs broken on the wheel and the head was put on a show on a stake. Thiedeman served in regiment Polentz, which was garronised in town.

Compagnien 1672 ~ Company strength

De website TEMPO is eigenlijk zonder de Knuttel catalogus van de KB, moeilijk efficient te doorzoeken. Meneer Knuttel heeft gelukkig al veel werk voor ons gedaan, en zo vond ik diverse compagnie betaallijsten. Opvallend blijft dat hoe groot de compagnie ook is (50, 80 of 100 man) het aantal officieren (de prima plana) gelijk blijft, net als hun salaris.



Several times I have mentioned the website TEMPO, where a lot of 16th and 17th century pamphlets can be found on-line. Mr Knuttel has made a catalogue, which can be found here, that greatly helps searching. I found several so called 'comany pay lists' starting in 1648, that gives the pay for officers and soldiers. The 1672 version has two lists for cavalry and four lists for infantry (50,60,80 and 100 men sized). Noteworthy is the fact that the number of officers always remains the same, (11 men) even if the company size varies. Also the pay of the officers remains the same, even if the size of the company varies. Obviously, this has led to serious troubles in 1672, as it is worth it keeping companies small. Another big problem in 1672 (in almost every European Army) was getting paid for soldiers who weren't even there. Only under William III a better system evolved keeping companies at strength.

Seneffe IX

Er zijn op dit blog al diverse lijsten gepubliceerd aan de hand van contemporaire pamflette, over de troepen die aanwezig waren bij de Slag van Seneffe. Op Tempo vond ik nog een lijst met verliezen, gerangschikt naar regiment.

Vergelijk deze lijst eens met deze hier.

Opvallend is, dat ik een aantal regimenten mis: het regiment Jonge Prins Maurits, Aylva, Amana, Mornout/Mauregnault, Waldeck, Heeswijck, Mario, Brantswart, Burmania, La Verne en Coranal.

Het regiment Jonge Prins Maurits was wel aanwezig, het bezette namelijk het dorp Seneffe in het begin van de slag. Prins Maurits werd hierbij gevangen genomen. De regimenten Aylva en Amana vochten in de tweede fase, maar van de rest kon ik niks vinden. van Mornout weet ik dat dit regiment niet aanwezig was bij Seneffe, het was toen gelegerd in Gent. Earlier on, I have posted several orders of battles of the States' Army at Seneffe. There is a list of the States' army on the march to the French border but I found a casualty list on TEMPO, which I have copied above. It's interesting to compare this list to the one here, and I have noticed that several regiments are missing from the list being: Young Prince Maurice, Aylva, Amana, Mornout/Mauregnault, Waldeck, Heeswijck, Mario, Brantswart, Burmania, La Verne and Coranal.

The first three regiments were at the battle (as listed in Calmeijers book on the Seneffe battle, regiment Mornout/Mauregnault was stationed in Gant at that time, but the other ones? Either thet weren't at the battle, or they were one of the few that got of lightly.
