De schans van Jutphaes ~ The Jutphaes Fortress 1672

Een mooie prent van het door de Fransen verwoeste fort Jutfaes, met een kruiwagen en rechts drie officieren met de begin 1670-jarigen dracht, dus met de korte mouwen. Deze prent is ook in een iets lagere resolutie te bekijken op de website van het Rijksmuseum, en daar vinden we ook dat de prent is gemaakt door Daniel Sorious die een serie prenten maakte over de door de Fransen in Utrecht gepleegde wreedheden.

Met dank aan de curatoren van het British Museum. Hun idee, beelden voor nop ter beschikking te stellen verdient zeker navolging!

A very nice plate by Daniel Sorious of the fortress of Jutfaas (or Jutfaes, Jutphaas, Jutphaes), part of a series of 12 plates on the destruction and cruelties the French did in Utrecht, (courtesy of and © Trustees of the British Museum), showing nice details like a wheelbarrow, a dog and what looks like an outhouse. Note the officers on the right with their early 1670's dress, so with the short arm sleeves and the folded large hat.

Van Harry Perton kreeg ik de tip om eens te kijken op de website van het British Museum: heb je namelijk een fraaie afbeelding gevonden, dan kun je na registratie, een mid-res scan krijgen van de afbeelding en hem reproduceren. De bovenstaande prent is ongeveer 1,5 MB. Helaas is dat niet genoeg om alle details te zien: je kunt nog net de zwaantjes zien op een van de Munsterse vaandels. Een uitermate lovenswaardig initiatief overigens.

Mr Harry Perton kindly pointed me to the website of the British Museum: after creating an account you can get mid-res resolution copies of the pictures, and you can use and reproduce them non-commercially for free. The above pic of the siege of Groningen is about 1,5 MB in size and unfortunatly, this isn't enough to catch all the details: if you look very carefully you can barely distinguish the swans on a Munster banner. Of course this is a great initiative, which I laud gracefully.

Uittocht uit Wedde ~ The leaving of Wedde

Op zoek naar meer informatie over het Munstersche leger, kwam ik uit op de weblog van Gelkinghe, waar ik de prent 'Uyt-tocht van 't Huys te Wedde. / Krachtelooze Hartstercking, galachtig uitgebraakt Door Kristoffel Beerenhart van Gaalen' aantrof. Deze plaat kwam van het British Museum. Op het weblog van Gelkinghe vind je ook de volledige tekst. Het is een schotschrift richting de bisschop in het Platduits.

Whilst looking for information on the Munster Army, I visited Gelkighe's blog, where I found a picture of Munster troops leaving the castle of Wedde, in the East of the Province of Groningen. The Bishop was the 'victim' of several of these rather offensive pamphlets, and you can find more of them on the site of the British Museum. This pamphlet is in Low German.
