Nassau Ouwerkerk

As some of you may know, the Dutch Army Museum has moved from Delft to a new big location at Soesterberg, and is now called the National Military Museum. 

A lot of the old collection can be found on-line now, like this drawing by Dutch Military artist Hoynck van Papendrecht, showing Dutch horse guards of the Nassau-Overkerk regiment. Unfortunately it is very difficult to evaluate this picture as we know little of his research, but it's nice anyway.

Penningen ~ Coins

Twee herinneringspenningen van schutterijen: een uit 1632 en een uit 1672. Penningen waren vaak een manier om mensen voor iets te bedanken of als herinnering, dus vervulden een beetje de rol van onderscheidingen.

Deze penningen werden gegevens aan leden van de schutterij die buiten hun stad dienden, ofwel als garnizoen dan wel fronttroepen.

Penningen zijn tevens een mooie bron voor de uniformkunde en de banistiek. Deze plaatjes komen uit het boek van Hoynck van Papendrecht 'Onze Schuttervendels en Schutterijen', een boek dat ook nog uit drukkers oogpunt interessant is vanwege de kleurplaten.



Two coins taken from the book by Hoynck van Papendrecht called 'Onze Schuttervendels en Schutterijen' ('Our militia companies and trained bands'). The first one shows an Amsterdam militiaman from 1632 and the second one is from the year 1672 from Leyden. Coins were given as a memorial or a gift, and can be regarded as a form of an early medal. In these cases, they were given to militiamen that served outside their town either as a garrison or as frontline troops.

Coins like these ar a valuable source for uniformology and vexillology and Hoynck's book is interesting itself for it's printing technology as well.

At last! 'The book with coloured drawings of the colours captured by Louis XIV, is kept in the Bibliothèque Nationale of Paris. The Prussian government ordered that a copy should be made, after interference of the Director of the Königl. Zeughaus in Berlijn, Major Dr. von Ubisch. He eas kind enough to lend me the copy of which I made these drawings.

You can find the book, also know as the Triomfs of Louis XIV, here.

Mr Belaubre probably used the original book in Paris for his works, and Bottema probably used the copy by Hoynck.

Deze plaatjes komen uit het boek 'Onze schutter-vendels en schutterijen van vroeger en later tijd, 1550-1908, in beeld en schrift / met inleidend woord van P.J. Blok ; een historisch album met aquarellen van J. Hoynck van Papendrecht en geschiedkundigen tekst van C. te Lintum', met een Haags schuttersvaandel eind 17e eeuw en het tweede plaatje het vaandel van de schutterij van Dordrecht.
