Seneffe IX

Er zijn op dit blog al diverse lijsten gepubliceerd aan de hand van contemporaire pamflette, over de troepen die aanwezig waren bij de Slag van Seneffe. Op Tempo vond ik nog een lijst met verliezen, gerangschikt naar regiment.

Vergelijk deze lijst eens met deze hier.

Opvallend is, dat ik een aantal regimenten mis: het regiment Jonge Prins Maurits, Aylva, Amana, Mornout/Mauregnault, Waldeck, Heeswijck, Mario, Brantswart, Burmania, La Verne en Coranal.

Het regiment Jonge Prins Maurits was wel aanwezig, het bezette namelijk het dorp Seneffe in het begin van de slag. Prins Maurits werd hierbij gevangen genomen. De regimenten Aylva en Amana vochten in de tweede fase, maar van de rest kon ik niks vinden. van Mornout weet ik dat dit regiment niet aanwezig was bij Seneffe, het was toen gelegerd in Gent. Earlier on, I have posted several orders of battles of the States' Army at Seneffe. There is a list of the States' army on the march to the French border but I found a casualty list on TEMPO, which I have copied above. It's interesting to compare this list to the one here, and I have noticed that several regiments are missing from the list being: Young Prince Maurice, Aylva, Amana, Mornout/Mauregnault, Waldeck, Heeswijck, Mario, Brantswart, Burmania, La Verne and Coranal.

The first three regiments were at the battle (as listed in Calmeijers book on the Seneffe battle, regiment Mornout/Mauregnault was stationed in Gant at that time, but the other ones? Either thet weren't at the battle, or they were one of the few that got of lightly.

Toch wel een beetje zuur dat de beste informatie over de Groningse troepen in 1672 geschreven zijn in het kader van een boek over Friesland! Op deze plek had ik al het werk van van Dam van Isselt gememoreerd, en deze verzocht aan de toenmalige rijksarchivaris van Groningen, Dr H.A. Poelman, om een overzicht van de troepen in Groningen. Zijn reactie is op pp. 261 e.v. gepubliceerd en hier weer neergezet.

Earlier, I mentioned the book of Mr van Dam van Isselt on the defense of Friesland in 1672. A bit strange is the fact that the best info on troops in Groningen can be found here as well. I have republished the relevant pages, and as a summary I'll take some highlights:

Most of the troops repartitioned on Groningen (regiments Clant en Broersema infantry and the regiment cavalry Prins Georg Frederik van Nassau), were drafted into the field army. Around 4 companies of the the old regiments remained. Also there remained: Ten companies set up in march 1671 and 9 new companies set up in spring 1672 (I am not quite sure which one of these would become Reg Rabenhaupt I)), 5 new companies of cavalry, some Frisian companies.

Before the siege of the town of Groningen the number of regular troops is raised by the presence of the Holstein Regiment, Königsmarck Regiment ans some (three companies) dragoons. The total strenght might be around 3000 regular troops. These troops were divided on the tyown and the fortresses around it. During the siege these troops were augmented with the regiment Jorman from Holland. After the siege Reg Jorman and Holstein return to Holland, but regiments Clant and Broersema could be filled with returning troops from those regiments.

In 1673 the troops in the north were strenghted by Reg. Aquila and Bampfield. It's not clear if the '10th man' a sort of elevee en masse was effectuated outside the town of Groningen. I am also missing the Stadholders Guard, a company of around 150 men.
