Haarlem

Zicht op Haarlem van Jacob van Ruisdaal. Dit schilderij bevindt zich in het Mauritshuis, maar op hun website vond ik maar een lullig klein plaatje, dit in tegenstelling tot de uitstekende website van het Rijksmuseum. Waarom dit plaatje? Omdat hij mooi is? Ja dat ook, maar ook omdat hij 'echt is'. Geen landschap met uitgestrekte bossen, of met bergen en heuvels, maar een stad met zijn molens, zijn stenen huizen en het bleekveld waar de was te drogen ligt. Uitermate geschikt voor modelbouwers en wargamers.


P.S. Het schilderij is geschilderd met een blik vanuit de duinen. Haarlem ligt zo'n 10 km van de zee.

P.S. 2 De luchten in onze streken zijn erg mooi, maar meteorologen zijn het er over eens dat de 17e eeuwse schilders het esthetische aspect vooral lieten prevaleren.

View on the city of Haarlem (in English 'Harlem' of NYC fame), by Jacob van Ruisdaal (or Ruysdaal, there was no fixed spelling in those times), a picture that is now in the Mauritshuis a museum in the Hague. Sorry to say, the Mauritshuis website is crap, but I found the pic as well on the excellent website of the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum.

Why did I choose this painting? Well, it's beautiful of course, but also very 'real'. No landscape with lush forests, or hills and mountains, but a typical Low Country city with its mills, stone houses and 'bleach field' where the washing is done. Very useful for both modellers and wargamers.

P.S. The view on Haarlem is from the West, on a dune. Haarlem is about 10 km's from the sea.

P.S. 2 The skies in our regions are beautiful, but on 17th century paintings esthetically pleasing but not very realistic.
