Order over de kledij ~ Clothing order I

One of the first official clothing orders of the States' Army, (the forst is from 1639) this one being from 1686, from Stadholder William III, basically stating that every two years the troops had to have new clothing. (And the captains and colonels had to sort it out in detail). Courtesy University Library Groningen.

  1. "And the captains and colonels had to sort it out in detail"
There is a famous example of an English colonel who gave his soldiers the old rags of a disbanded regiment, and allowed himself to profit from it. He took the business of regimental entrepreneurship probably a bit to literal, and was cashiered as a consequence.
