Nieuw Amsterdam 1650

Vanochtend in de krant, nu op dit weblog beland, in artikel 101, een blik op Nieuw Amsterdam van de Amerikaanse kunstenaar Len Tantillo wiens overige schilderijen hier te zien zijn, en in het echt in het West-Fries museum. Meer plaatjes zijn hier te vinden.

Nicked from the loca newspaper, a painting by American artist Len Tantillo, whose work can be seen on the website of the Westfries museum. This year is the year that the discovery/founding/ etc of New Amsterdam is celebrated both in New York and in the Netherlands. More pics here.

Von Bolsey

In de prachtige 'Statens trofésamling' in het Armémuseum in Stockholm bevindt zich deze Brandenburgse vlag met een Nederlands tintje. Het was van een Brandenburgs mariniersregiment, opgericht door Simon von Bolsey in 1674. De mariniers werden gerecruteerd, gedrild en uitgerust in Nederland. Ook de vlaggen werden daar gemaakt, vandaar de oranjetakken als ornament. De compagniesvlaggen waren zwart, die van de kolonel wit. Het motto luidt "tout vient à point à qui peut attendre"; alles komt voor hen die kunnen wachten. Maar het regiment wachtte een nederlaag: bij de aanval op de Zweedse vesting Carlsborg in 1675 verloren ze hun vaandels.

The lovely 'Statens trofésamling' in the Armémuseum in Stockholm contains this Dutch flavoured Brandenburg flag. It belonged to a Brandenburg regiment of marines, founded by Simon von Bolsey in 1674. The marines were recruited, equipped and drilled in the Netherlands. Their flags were made there too, hence the (Dutch) orange branches. Company flags were black, the colonel's was white. The motto says "tout vient à point à qui peut attendre"; all things come to those who can wait. But defeat was waiting for them: the regiment lost their colours during the attack on the Swedish fortress Carlsborg in 1675.

Met behulp van de familie Kingma, Popta State en het Fries Museum heb ik (o.a.) de sjabrak kunnen opsporen van Ignatius van Kingma. Deze pedante Fries was kolonel van het cavalerieregiment Kingma en bevocht in 1672 de Fransen bij het Tolhuis en Muiden en hielp in 1673 Coevorden te heroveren. Dankzij de nieuwe informatie is het mogelijk om uniform- en vaandelreconstructies te maken van dit regiment dat in 1688 werd opgeheven. Binnenkort meer...

Due to the kind help provided by the Kingma family, Popta State and the Fries Museum I was able to trace the shabraque (amongst other items) of Ignatius van Kingma. This smug Frisian was the colonel-proprietor of the cavalry regiment Kingma and fought the French at Tolhuis and Muiden in 1672 and helped to reconquer Coevorden in 1673. This new information enables us to reconstruct the regimental uniforms and standards. To be continued...

Munsters vaandel

Tja, die Zweden. In 1678 vochten ze met Bernard van Galen (zie commentaar van Dan Schorr in de vorige post) en maakten deze vlag buit.

Meer hier, met dank aan Thomas Ingvarsson, die mij er op wees dat 'flagga' of 'fana' zweeds is voor vlag. Zoeken op of met 1678 helpt ook veel.

Yes, them Swedes. In 1678 they fought Bernard van Galen, (see commentary of Dan Schorr in my previous post), and captured the above flag. Taken from a great swedish site, 'flagga' or fanna' is swedish for flag, 1678 is also a great search word.

Mooie foto van Kasteel Neuhaus in Paderborn. Op het wapen het wapen van Keulen en dat van Munster. De Munsterse kleuren waren goud en rood. Van de site van Dr Bernhard Peter.

On this shield you can see the weapon of Cologne (black cross on white field), and the munster weapon as well: a gold bar on a red field. Red seems to be a striking colour in the Bishop's weapon. Munsterse troepen ~ Munster troops

Het schilderij van Bock is eigenlijk alleen met een ladder (dan kan je namelijk ook het bovenste gedeelte wat beter zien) , en professionele lampen goed te fotograferen. Elke keer als ik er naar kijk, zie ik wel weer iets nieuws, varierend van een ruiter, tot een aantal lijken aan de galg op de galgenberg.

Op deze uitsnede, een groepje marcherende Munsterse soldaten. De gewone man is in het bruin, links vooraan staat er echter weer één in het blauw en ik neem aan dat het nogal patserige mannetje in het rood met de sierlijke hoed een officier is.

Op de achtergrond de rode vlaggen en een witte vlag. Het lijkt er op dat de Munstersen de gewoonte hadden om de kolonelsvlag ook in het wit te doen. Details op de vlaggen zijn niet zichtbaar.

The only way to have a good look on the painting is using a scaffold and professional lighting. The council is planning to digitise it's collection, so maybe a art-historian will make some detail pics. I would like to thank the friendly people at city hall, for letting me take the pics anyhow.

A cut out of the painting showing marching Munster troops, mostly dressed in brown, with just one blue dressed gentleman in the ranks. I assume the cocky man in red with the posh hat is an officer. Also note the red flags and the one white flag. Maybe we can assume that the Munster army followed other nations by using a white colonels flag. Unfortunatly details on the flag can not bee seen.

Nog een gedeelte van het schilderij van Bock, met daarop duidelijk te zien hoe de loopgraven lagen en hoe er vanaf de stad werd gevuurd.

Another part of the painting of Bock, clearly showing the trenches and return fire from the bastions of the city. In Groningen and Friesland, 'bastions' were called 'dwingers' or 'enforcers'.

Vandaag nog even de gelegenheid gehad om wat foto's met de digitale camera te nemen van Bock's schilderij. Opvallend de uniformen van de Keulsen en Munstersen: eigenlijk alle kleuren door elkaar, maar het is opvallend dat officieren in't algemeen in rood zijn gekleed. Je ziet echter ook veel bruin en blauw, en er is ergens een dokter bezig in het grijs.

Today I had the opportunity to take some pics in city hall, and they turned out a bit better than the iphone ones. Note the uniforms of the Munster and Cologne troops: lots of colours, but officers seem to be dresses in red. There's also a lot of blue, brown and even grey.
