Vandaag / Today in 1672

Op 1 juli 1672 werd door de Staten Generaal indirect besloten het eeuwig niet na te leven, zodat Willem III zowel stadhouder als kapitein-generaal kon worden.

On July the first in 1672, under enormeous pressure, some representatives suggested the withdrawal of the Eeuwig Edict, a Holland regulation forbidding the combination of Stadholdership and the function of Captain-Genergal of the States' Army. This was a way to block the political power of William III, but to no avail: the Eeuwig Edict was withdrawn.
