Het DBNL is de Digitale Bibliotheek der Nederlandse Letteren. Niet alleen in het nederlands, want ik vond daar ook het dagboek van Constantijn Huygens Jr, (secretaris van Willem III) over de periode 1673-1678, in het Frans!

DBNL stands for Digital Library of Dutch Literature. It isn't just in Dutch, because I found the diary of Constantijn Huygens Jr. -the secretary of William III - , in French!

He wrote a familiar thing about the weather, 'Il fit un tresmauvais temps auec une pluye et vent continuels..' Ah, well, nothing changes...

Due to the Spanish Netherlands’ strategic importance to both the Dutch Republic and France, the so-called “Cockpit of Europe” attracted immense armies on both sides. France assembled the largest army until the Napoleonic Wars during the Nine Years’ War; and the largest of its field armies was deployed in the Low Countries Theater. For the allies, the burden of the war effort in the Spanish Netherlands fell to England and the Dutch Republic, the wealthiest and militarily strongest of the coalition’s members. The combination of geography, politics, and strategy merged resulting in the greatest of the allies’ armies, the army the army of Stadhouder-Koning William III.

VOC schip in brand ~ VOC ship Prince William burns down

Vanmorgen reed ik door Den Helder en zag het VOC replica-schip Prins Willem, dat gisteren in brand vloog, nog steeds nabranden. Na een korte vakantie op de Waddeneilanden straks meer over de brand en het marinemuseum van Den Helder.

This morning I saw the still burning remains of the VOC ship Prince William in the harbour of Den Helder. After a short holiday on the Wadden-Islands, more on this and more on the Navy Museum of Den Helder.
