Deser Landen Crijchsvolck ~ This land's soldiers

On my way to the Wadden Isles, I bought 'Deser Landen Crijghsvoclk' in the then renewed bookshop in Sneek. It's the second book in a series of four on the Dutch Golden age and the military aspect of it.

I have read the book now three times (at least) and it's obligatory reading for anyone interested in the period 1650-1750. Dr Van Nimwegen makes new insights like his statement that the Dutch Republic was a major power up to 1751.

This book deserves a translation into English because it shows that it was the Dutch Republic that - initially on it's own - stopped Louis XIV, and until his death was the motor for his final downfall. Sorry Marlborough.

PS The books contains some nice pictures 'from the collection of the author'. I am very very jealous...

2 opmerkingen:

  1. I agree that van Nimwegen's books should be translated, but I doubt they will be. Trying to buy a copy is difficult and expensive if one lives in the U.S. Not exactly a hugh market for Duitch books here.
