Uniformen ~ Uniform guides

The good people of the League of Augsburg have made a comprehensive set of uniform guides for the Williamite Wars in Ireland.

Nassau Ouwerkerk

As some of you may know, the Dutch Army Museum has moved from Delft to a new big location at Soesterberg, and is now called the National Military Museum.

A lot of the old collection can be found on-line now, like this drawing by Dutch Military artist Hoynck van Papendrecht, showing Dutch horse guards of the Nassau-Overkerk regiment. Unfortunately it is very difficult to evaluate this picture as we know little of his research, but it's nice anyway.

Thaulow.

~

Whilst browsing the local bookstores I found a nice book in Danish on the Danish Army, "Den Danske Soldat", by Th Thaulow, 1946, with some nice period pictures in it of which I show two. The book takes a very broad view on the Danish Army, from the Middle Ages up to the Second World War.

Regiment Brandenburg in London

~

The above snippet is an article from the London Gazette (The Gazette which is now available online), and that's a great resource for finding information on people and even uniforms.

The snippet is an advertisement concerning three deserters, two of them dreesed in a gray uniform. From the name Packmoor,(also written as Packmohr) a name that also can be found in the list of losses at the battle of Mont-Cassel, we can link that name with the regiment of Prince Albrecht Friedrich of Brandenburg. (Well, it's also in the ad of course..)

Sapherson links the uniform with the wrong regiment, but Hall links them with the right one: the name Packmoor is -indeed- linked with this regiment several times and the blue/grey uniform is confirmed by shipments of cloth in those colours.

~

It is my humble opinion that around 1671 it was quite clear that the French were planning something. Contemporary newspapers start to report on military matters more and more and the London Gazette reports in may and juni 1671 about the new uniforms for the Spanish troops: grey with red facings for the coats. It's a start..

Order over de kledij ~ Clothing order I

~

One of the first official clothing orders of the States' Army, (the forst is from 1639) this one being from 1686, from Stadholder William III, basically stating that every two years the troops had to have new clothing. (And the captains and colonels had to sort it out in detail). Courtesy University Library Groningen.

Two very nice plates from the Anne Brown Collection, depicting an order of Battle from the year 1743, clearly showing the uniform details.

Garde grenadiers? - Guard grenadiers?

~
An anonymous print (dated 1690/91) depicting the Battle of the Boyne shows three Dutch soldiers with remarkable headwear. They are obviously grenadiers as they are armed with grenades. Their caps are decorated with plumes or fur. The troops surrounding them are the Dutch Horse Guards and the Dutch Foot Guards, first to cross the Boyne river. Are these grenadiers of the Foot Guards? The print maker is accurate in depicting the other soldiers’ uniforms, so it is tempting to say that this might be an accurate depiction of Guard grenadiers…

Uniformen 1690 ~ Uniforms

~

On the site of the dutch army museum a series of 42 plates is reproduced made by Dr de Wilde on uniforms of the 1690 period. The info is based on several sources, but mainly on ducuments regarding the export of cloth to the troops to other countries or provinces. (All export had to be taxed and documented of course!)

From these documentents and the general look of a uniform it could be deduced which particular clots was used for what. (Most of the cloth was used for the coat, and a smaller portion for cuffs and the like.)

The above pic shows the dutch guards, this time in a blue/yellow uniform and this picture is based on a picture that was sadly destroyed in 1944.

More pictures here.

Uniform Stadhouderlijk Regiment Friesland 1678

~

Some nice info about uniforms in general and the uniform of the Frisian Naussau regiment, taken from Dr Olaf van Nimwegen's book, The Dutch Army and the Military Revolutions. According to Belaubre and de Wilde, blue was also used in a later period.

Legerlijst 1691 ~ Army List 1691

A full armylist of the King William's Confederate Army, plus the description of the uniforms. From the website EEBO. Note the abundance of white uniforms in the dutch regiments.

Mode en uniformen ~ Fashion and uniforms

~

A pretty picture from a military magazine from Austria, which I found on Google Books. It deals with the link between fashion and military dress from the middle ages up to the 19th century. Text is in german. Falke, the writer, introduces the justacorps in France in 1670, but Austrians/Imperialists had them in the 1690's. There's a picture of a dutch nobleman from 1672 (Backhuysen's Reede van Texel) that shows a justacorps as well.

One of the few 17th century plates by Richard Knötel representing the 17th century, being troops from Hannover, Germany. More of his works here. Most of the plates in this series of books are 19th century ones.

On archive.org you can find Knötel's Handbook in German.

Engelse legerlijsten ~ English Army Lists 1684

Even opletten mensen!

~

Atten....shun! On the website British Army Lineages, a reference can be found on the works of a Nathan Brook from 1690, giving detailed information on King James' Army, with colour and uniform references. Above - from EEBO- info on the York & Albany Regiment.

Grosset Uniformen book / book / livre

Meh dus.

~~

A better title for this book would be 'English uniforms from the year 1688, but actually from 1703, plus some Frogs, Krauts and Yanks thrown in for good measure'. Meh.

Funcken Uniform boek / book / livre

Not to be taken that seriously these books: a bit childish sixties style, France centred books on uniforms. Reminds me of the comic magazine Kuijfje/Tin tin. Second pic shows a 'dutchman' on the right, and the third pic shows some French soldiers and officers around 1672.

Nieuw Amsterdam II

C.B. Nicolas.

~~

The above pic of a Dutch marine comes from the Osprey on colonial american troops, representing one of the marines that recaptured New Amsterdam in 1673. The info is derived (to put it mildly) from an article in 1971 by Chapman and Nyland in the Journal of the Company of Military Historians.

Their info comes from Bosscher's book on the marines from 1966 and from correspondence with the dutch MOD and the Dutch Armymuseum.

(As a side note: the marine is standing in front of a dutch looking building, but in my view the bricks are drawn too big and look too english. This makes a lot of wargames buildings made in the UK rather useless for the Low Countries).

The sources agree the uniform consisted of a blue 'justacorps'. Chapman and Nyland add that the uniform had 16 pewter buttons, and a yellow cuff with three buttons. Shoes and hats were brown and the breeches could be brown, grey or red. The socks could be grey or blue wool. Leatherwork was brown.

Additional info comes from Windrow's 'Military Dress of North America, 1665-1970' (ISBN 07110-0468-4) which describes the officers in detail: they wore an orange sash around the waist, and had a ring collar with a velvet back piece in different colours. Lower ranking officers had a white lace ' distinction' to denote rank on the right shoulder. Officers could wear boots and gloves in finer leather. Officers also wore a 'cravatte'.

From their foundation in 1665, the marines were armed with ' snaphaunces' , the predecessor of the flintlock, or the flintlocks themselves.

Many thanks to Drs. C.B. Nicolas.

A small booklet, in the same format as the Fibula books, so the printwork is of excellent quality, especially the b/w pics. Unfortunatly the post 1800 year period has a bit too much emphasis, but he book has great info on the genealogy of dutch regiments.

~~

Two more quotes from the 'Wytlopiger Journael', of the siege of Groningen in 1672. It states that on the first of July some troops of the Königsmarck IR arrived in Groningen, 'armed with sharp curved axes, which they used in stead of swords'.

The second quote goes like this:

'August 1. Thursday the enemy shot vigorously with glowing bullets, en also they shot grenades from a cannon, one of which hit the horse stable of His Excellency. Later in the afternoon, some more Königsmarck troops arrived, all dressed in blue, who were stationed in tents on the Nieuwe Kerkhof-square. Also that evening the reinforcements as promised by his Highness, the Prince of Orange, arrived, in the form of 14 companies of the Jorman Regiment. They came in 33 ships, easy to be seen by the enemy, and of course that must have been a shock to him. It was quiet the following night.
