Deense uniformen ~ Danish Uniforms

Geleend van het Deens Militair genootschap. Hier de begeleidende tekst. Rond 1676.

Borrowed from the Danish Military Historical Society. Website here. Most of the text is in Danish, but you can work out things very easily.

Lisa Jardine

~

Dutch reception of Jardine's book was rather lukewarm, and the editors of this blog dug up this book in a book sale in Leeuwarden. Rather more amusing were the english reactions on this book, like from the Independent, The Sunday Times, Amazon and the Guardian. Invasion? No invasion!

Groninger Schutterij ~ City militia of Groningen

In the post below the editors mentioned a visit to a book fair in town, which took place in the splendid Der Aa church. We took the opportunity to take a peek and we noticed the special church benches for the Militia, which also can be found in the larger Martini church in Groningen, where the militia (better: the officers from the ruling class) even has it's own church window.

Note the flag, wuth the city emblem slightly moved for esthetic reasons. It's my view the city emblem, the two headed crowned Imperial eagle with the white/green shield, was probably in the centre of the flag.

~

Rather a lucky day today, as one of the big book stores had a sale, and we aquiired a book on the founding of New York/Nieuw Amsterdam, lavishly illustraded and great text. I never knew that Broadway was once known as 'Heerestraat'.

Landleven 2 ~ Country Life 2

I am not very proud of this, but one of the characteristics of the Dutch is their tendency to complain. Even when we have nothing to complain, we complain of course that we can't complain.

Even the relative mild climatological circumstances are a cause of lamentations. The sight of a few snowflakes is even cause for panic, leading to some kind of standstill of economic and public life. How different things were in the 17th century, as we can see in the above painting of Overijssel painter Hendrik Avercamp. Avercamp is a great resource for clothing and fashion of the early 17th century, and also note the architecture, being a mix of wooden and stone buildings, and showing a great variation in roofing. Great inspiration for modellers, you can find more paintings of Avercamp on the website of the Rijksmuseum.
