Captured Flags! "Les Triomphes de Louis le Grand"
On Gallica you can find a copy of the book that describes the various flags that were captured by the French during Louis XIV reign (there is also a Louis XV version).
It doesn't contain a description,of the flags so you have to have either the excellent Robert Hall CD, or the earlier works by Dr Jean Belaubre.
I can tell you though that the second flag above belogs to regiment Aylva, and was captured at Seneffe.

Period flags
From the Boxel Manual. also a short description of Regiment Flags, like the one of the (Scottish) Colonel Kirckpatrick: Yellow and Blue, divided in four. It was also possible that "Figures" were placed on the flag, like yellow (pikes or pikemen), green musqueteers or red horsemen.
Also very likely would be a Province Weapon showing the paymaster, in the left upper corner.

Thaulow.
~
Whilst browsing the local bookstores I found a nice book in Danish on the Danish Army, "Den Danske Soldat", by Th Thaulow, 1946, with some nice period pictures in it of which I show two. The book takes a very broad view on the Danish Army, from the Middle Ages up to the Second World War.

~
We found out that If you are planning to write a book on an historical subject, it not only takes time, but a lot of time. In the course of years we have aquired a lot of books, pamphlets, paintings and articles and we still have to make a visit to several archives and libraries.
Next step is organising the information, and in that process we started picking up "Toneel des Oorloghs" again, a book by Lambertus Sylvius (posh Latin for "Lambert van den Bosch" or in English "Lambert Woods"), illustrated by Romeyn de Hooghe. The picture above shows a part of a print showing miserable civilians pleading with a French commander as part of a series on french atrocities.
Note the colour (=army flag) of the French commander, with the fleur de lis, a coat of arms, and flames from the corner, which is rather different from the normal french colours. Unfortunatly I could not identify the coat of arms yet..

BBC & Schilderijen ~ Paintings
~
Visitors of the Rijksmuseum, can now fool around with the images of almost 300.000 works of art on the website. On the other side of the Channel the BBC is doing an effort to make at least 200.000 paintings accesible on the internet.
Thanks to the BBC we found two paintings of Pieter Wouwerman, depicting camp life in the 1670's. Note that the flags and colours are generic and have no relation to existing regiments, a commercial trick enabling the painter to get a greater audience.

Deventer 1578
~
A slight detour from our normal research, but last week we recieved an article from 1976 by Klaes Sierksma about this painting showing the siege of Deventer in 1578, by Stadholder Rennenberg against the German Garrison. The siege was part of Maurice of Orange campaign of 1578.
A lot of the colours have been identified, which can give us more info on Maurice army. The most interesting thing is, the use of the St. Andrew's cross by the States' Army, which is generally linked to the Spanish.

~
A while ago, we posted an article on the Regiment Uytenhove, which according to an artcle in Mars et Historia took over the colour of the previous colonel, being Colonel van Beveren in 1673.
Picture 1. shows the ensign with the colour, and according to information of mr Dan Schorr, this drawing originates in de the Collection de Ridder in Paris, drawn by the Austrian historian Norbert Robitscheck. Copies are as well to be found in the collection of the Dutch Army Museum.
Colonel van Beveren stems from an old dutch noble family with ties in Flanders as well.
I have found a book on google books, with details on the family and I took a screenshot of the page concerning the Colonel Johan van Beveren, as picture 2. The book also shows the family weapon of the van Beveren family, it's the third on picture 3.
Interesting enough, this weapon is NOT on the colour, except for the obvious beaver (Beveren is dutch for "beaver" plus the suffix -en, which usually denotes a place name).
What's even more interesting is, is a small detour to Germany.
I found a nice Arms and coats book from 1701 with a lot of german families in it. The van Beveren family can be found in Westphalia, Brunswick and there's even a Freiherr of Bevern.
(Pictures 4. 5. and 6.)
Note that on the colour some of the german elemant can be found, like the three oxen, the obvious beaver and the zigzag motive.
Also note that the dutch family van Beveren has no ties with the german one, so how did these german elements show up on the colour? A language mismatch? Cut/paste?..

Hendrik Kasimir II
The two flags, taken from the low res version on the website of the Dutch Army museum from the Ten Raa collection, were captured at the bloody battle of Fleurus, 1690, where the French cavalry smashed through the dutch cavalry and causes death and destruction next on the infantry. In the left hand corner you can see the weapon of the Frisian Stadholder, but it differs from other known weaponsm which caused me to think it might be an Utrecht flag which is badly copied, but the other flag looks correct, so that wasn't an option.

Vaandelboek Otto Neubecker ~ Flag Book
~
If you are interested in flags, you may have heard of the great german expert Otto Neubecker who - for political reasons, he was married to a Jewish woman- anonymously published a lot of nice books before the war and the above book is one of them. Despite the rather grubby look, the pictures on the inside are of great quality and cover a long period in time, like the Roman era, the 30 years war and some of the Louis XIV period, based on the famous "Les Triomphes de Louis le Grand" book in Paris and German collections.
I also found in the book a link to the collection of the Bavarian Army museum, and guess what?..the museum has put part of their collection online here! Click on the Farbtafeln link to get access to the picture file, showing flags of the 17th, 18th and 19th century.

Vaandels/Colours WIC update

~
Thanks to lt-Col Nicolas and one of his relatives in the US, we have recieved a colour copy of a book, representing colours for troops in Brazil of the Dutch West Indies Company.
We have posted earlier on this book here . Our post deals with two articles of the great Frisian historian and flag expert Klaes Sierksma on an order book, found in New York dealing with new(?) colours for the WIC troops around 1631 in Brazil, at that time a dutch colony. In his article in Mars et Historia Sierksma further analyses the book, describing the colours of the three regiments of troops "blue", "orange" and "green", each consisting of 9 companies.
A lot of extra information in the article comes from the Groninger Professor P.J. van Winter, who wrote a book on the Groninger Chamber of the WIC. Unfortunatly I haven't found van Winter's notes yet, but there's a lot of information now in the National Archives on the WIC, including a list of soldiers sent to Brazil.
The colour above, is the one of the company paid by Groninger chamber of course.

~
The French website Gallica is really a great joy to discover, and they now offer more hi-res pics. I found a French book on captured colours from the late 17th century/early18th century for you all to enjoy.
it looks like some of the first colours depicted are from the garrison of Dixmuide. More info on them here.

~
Another painting of the Great Hall of the Binnenhof, the Hague, by painter Hendrik Pothoven from the year 1779. In the background the trophies of the War of the Spanish Succession. It is very likely that these were destroyed when the French took over in the Napoleonic period, fortunatly these trophies were described in several booklets and pamphlets, which can be found at the site of the Rijksmuseum. The picture is ten from the history website "Geheugen van Nederland".

~
This is a rather famous painting by dutch painter Dirck van Delen, made in the period 1651-1671, showing the great hall in the Binnenhof, the Hague, where the States General convened.
Above you can see various Spanish colours, captured in the 80 years war. Note the terrible state they are in (I don't think there's a colour left from this collection), but you can admire their beauty.

~
Well, the title says it all, a pamphlet, from the Rijksmuseum site, celebrating the gift of a captured French Royal Colour to the court in Brussels. From the Rijksmuseum, who also have another plate showing a slightly different version.

Kassel 1677 kaart en vaandels ~ Map and colours

Suggesties welkom!
Another nice pic, from the Rijksmuseum, a French print from 1677 depicting the battle of Kassel. Of peculiar interest is de right hand corner, which shows Louis XIV as a victor above captured weapons and flags.
Personally, I think the upper left one is a dutch one, the upper right a Spanish, and the other two might be German? Suggestions of course are welcome!

~
Two pics of a Munster flag captured by the Swedes in 1678, plus an article in German about the heraldry of the Bishop of Munster, taken from a catalogue by the Landesmuseum Munster called Bommen Berend. Unfortunatly the motto's are not readable and do no coincide with known motto's of the Bishop.

1672 Gronings Studentenvaandel

~
A slighty better pic from a colour of the Groninger "Student-company", which was used in 1672 as well. It's one of the few surviving 17th century colours as well, outside of the Rijksmuseum.
Note the weapon in the left hand corner of the Province of Groningen (The States of Groningen gave the colour as a gift). The colour is decribed as gold, with green/blue leaves on it.
The motto is Deo Patriae Academiae, For God, Country and the Academy (= University). The acoompagning text is from the Groninger Volksalmanak of 1838. The colour now is kept in the cellars of the University Museum.

Amsterdamse Schutterij ~ Amsterdam Militia

~
From the Dutch Royal Library (Knottel 10570) 2 pages dealing with a roster for service in the town of Amsterdam, like guarding the bridges, gates and the main buildings.
In 1672 the city of Amsterdam had 60 companies of militia, but it's quite difficult to trace how they were organised: this could be geographically, maybe by profession but it isn't quite thoroughly researched for Amsterdam, as most publications deal with the accompagning art (like Rembrandt's Nightwatch) or politcs. Intersting on these pages is the use of colour for distiguishing companies(?): Orange, Blue, White, Green, Yellow and Purple, a thing I also found in the town of Hague. I found references to flags of these colours with the city weapon on in, but these date from the 18th century.
So much to research and so little time!

Vaandels Groningen 1672

From the Groninger Archives, from the books of 1672, I dug up a financial piece of info on colours for the groninger troops. The entry deals with a payment for 8 banners to the the widow Stoedenborch, and the decond part deals with a colour for the bodyguard of His Excellency Rabenhaupt. All colours were 40 guilders each.
Unfortunatly the colours are not decribed. A description might be found in the notary archives like in the province of Holland, or maybe a chance text will show up, like in Utrecht.
