Begrafenis Wirtz ~ State funeral of Wirtz

Een uitsnede van een prent die de staatsbegrafenis van veldmaarschalk Wirtz uitbeeldt, uit het jaar 1676. Dit soort prenten zijn om een groot aantal redenen interessant, waarover in een latere post meer, maar nu al even een interessant puntje. Zie ik nu hier musketiers met furketten? Ik verkeerde in de veronderstelling dat die al waren afgeschaft?

This is part of the print from the State funeral in 1676 of Fieldmarshal Wirtz. These kind of prints are very interesting for numerous reasons which I can't delve into now, due to a pending publication, but one of the interesting points I thought to share were the musketeers in the procession with furkets. I always thought these were discarded decades ago.

"The Girl with the Pearl Earring"

Films over de tweede helft van de 17e eeuw zijn erg zeldzaam, en als het dan nog over Nederland moet gaan, moet je echt met een lamp gaan zoeken. Toch eentje gevonden, over de jaren 1660 in Delft. Leuk zicht op het huiselijk leven binnen.





Van een heel andere orde is de Franse film Vatel, met de bijna onvermijdelijke Gerard Depardieu, over een bezoek van Lodewijk de XIVe aan het landgoed van Conde. Da's pas feesten!






Movies with a late 17th century theme are quite rare, and if it has to have some kind of dutch theme, well..there aren't many. The above video comes from the 2003 movie Girl with a Pearl Earring, centered around a painting of the great dutch artist Vermeer. Nice city views of Delft in the movie.


The Vermeer movie is a total visual contrast to the second movie, Vatel, from 2000 about a visit in 1671 of Louis XIV to the estate of Conde. Conde wants to impress the King to get a commission with a great welcome, with the looming 1672 on the background. Starring Uma Thurmann and the almost inevitable Gerard Depardieu.

Well... at least the French knew how to throw a party..

Nederlandse Uniformen 1752-1800

Net in de brievenbus, een uitgave van het NIMH, Ministerie van de Defensie en het Legermuseum, een heruitgave van het beroemde Jassenboek, met een extra prentenset en kundig commentaar.



Just arrived in the mailbox, a book on Dutch Army infantry uniforms of the second half of the 18th century, based on the famous Jassenboek (Coat Book), plus an extra set of drawings and an introduction.

The book is available in dutch, english and german and can be ordered at the NIMH and the dutch army museum.

On the site of the dutch army museum a series of 42 plates is reproduced made by Dr de Wilde on uniforms of the 1690 period. The info is based on several sources, but mainly on ducuments regarding the export of cloth to the troops to other countries or provinces. (All export had to be taxed and documented of course!)

From these documentents and the general look of a uniform it could be deduced which particular clots was used for what. (Most of the cloth was used for the coat, and a smaller portion for cuffs and the like.)

The above pic shows the dutch guards, this time in a blue/yellow uniform and this picture is based on a picture that was sadly destroyed in 1944.

Uniform Stadhouderlijk Regiment Friesland 1678

Uit Olaf van Nimwegen's boek "Deser landen Crijchsvolck" nog wat leuke informatie over uniformen in het algemeen en het uniform van het Friese regiment Nassau Friesland: een blauw uniform met rode opslagen en rode kousen, althans in 1678. Uit Belaubre weten we dat dit ook in 1690 was.

Some nice info about uniforms in general and the uniform of the Frisian Naussau regiment, taken from Dr Olaf van Nimwegen's book, The Dutch Army and the Military Revolutions. According to Belaubre and de Wilde, blue was also used in a later period.

Spaanse vaandels - Spanish colours 1600 II

En nog een schilderij van de grote zaal, ditmaal een van Hendrik Pothoven uit 1779. Op de achtergrond enige tropheeen uit de Spaanse Successieoorlog.

Another painting of the Great Hall of the Binnenhof, the Hague, by painter Hendrik Pothoven from the year 1779. In the background the trophies of the War of the Spanish Succession. It is very likely that these were destroyed when the French took over in the Napoleonic period, fortunatly these trophies were described in several booklets and pamphlets, which can be found at the site of the Rijksmuseum.
