Groningen 28 augustus 1672

Morgen 28 augustus en dus feest!

~

Tomorrow we celebrate the relief of the siege of Groningen. Picture from the painting by Folkert Bock taken by the editor of this blog. Usually it's a day off, but some of us have to work alas.

We found out that If you are planning to write a book on an historical subject, it not only takes time, but a lot of time. In the course of years we have aquired a lot of books, pamphlets, paintings and articles and we still have to make a visit to several archives and libraries.

Next step is organising the information, and in that process we started picking up "Toneel des Oorloghs" again, a book by Lambertus Sylvius (posh Latin for "Lambert van den Bosch" or in English "Lambert Woods"), illustrated by Romeyn de Hooghe. The picture above shows a part of a print showing miserable civilians pleading with a French commander as part of a series on french atrocities.

Note the colour (=army flag) of the French commander, with the fleur de lis, a coat of arms, and flames from the corner, which is rather different from the normal french colours. Unfortunatly I could not identify the coat of arms yet..

Order over de kledij ~ Clothing order I

One of the first official clothing orders of the States' Army, (the forst is from 1639) this one being from 1686, from Stadholder William III, basically stating that every two years the troops had to have new clothing. (And the captains and colonels had to sort it out in detail). Courtesy University Library Groningen.

Alkmaar eind 17e eeuw ~ The city of Alkmaar, end of the 17th century

~

These are some pics I took in the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar of a giant diorama in the entrance hall of the museum. The buildings are all very detailed and a joy to watch. The website of the museum has links to the presentations and also to the collection. When I was there there was a lot of focus on the unsucessful 1573 siege by the Spanish and the dutch Golden Age.

Grenadiersmutsen ~ Grenadier hats

~

The Dutch Army museum is moving to the new location in Soesterberg, but we can still enjoy the publications and research, like this picture of two grenadier caps from around the year 1750. I took this pic from the publication "Vriendendienst" of the museum. The left cap is prpbably a bit earlier, around 1730?, the right one obviously belongs to one of the Oranje regiments, my first guess, the Oranje-Nassau regiment of 1747.

Vandaag / Today in 1672

~

On July the first in 1672, under enormeous pressure, some representatives suggested the withdrawal of the Eeuwig Edict, a Holland regulation forbidding the combination of Stadholdership and the function of Captain-Genergal of the States' Army. This was a way to block the political power of William III, but to no avail: the Eeuwig Edict was withdrawn.

The pamphlet above is a poem dedicating the steps some representatives did in January 1672. (Knottel 10251, from the KB collection TEMPO)
