Oudeschans museum III

We Dutch are blessed with a lot of musea, and all those musea have guides and booklets. In the Oudeschans museum I found a real treasure, showing the 1672/1673 war in the eastern part of the Province of Groningen. The text deals with the fight of Colonel Jorman near the town of Winschoten and the surrender of the town of Oudeschans, under Munster commander Grubbe.

Oudeschans museum II

Some more pics of the small fortress town of Oudeschans. We visited the town before, but then the museum was closed, and as today was a good day, we undertook te voyage again.

It's a small but very nice museum showing archeological artifacts of the 16th and 17th century. The garrison church is one of the buildings that was restored.

Oudeschans IV

The Dollard estuary in the 16th century lay a bit farther inland than now. In the river the Westerwoldse A, a lock (here called a 'zijl', or 'ziel') was placed and given it's strategic place, in 1593 a sconce ('schans' in Dutch) was placed, which later grew to the village of Oudeschans. In 1660 the sconce was enlarged and strenghtened.

In 1672 Oudeschans was captured by the Munster troops, but recaptured by Rabenhaupt, and the Munster commander Grubbe left de strongpoint on the 28th of October, with 7 flags, 300 man en two small guns. Sieges were a very formal affair and it looks like the Sconce War against the Spanish of the 80 years war relived.

Most of the info comes from the leaflet 'Oudeschans', which was made within the project 'Grensland-Vestingland' ('Borderland-Fortification land') of the Province Groningen, which also led to new signs and tourist information. Too bad the museum was closed when I was there, but that's a good reason to go there again. (In the museum is for instance a real 'apostle' to be seen).

The first pic is the tourist map of Oudeschans. Unfortunatly we were a bit early so the café's were closed, just like the museum. Second pic is from the command station, now the museum and the third pic is of the garrison church. Our next target was Boertange, where we arrived a bit later due to festivities in Vlagtwedde. In Bourtange I bought several leaflets, like the one on Oudeschans, and a few of them are from Dr Overdiep, late President of the Local Court and local historian.
