Maastricht Fortress of St Peter

This years expedition was to the Limburg Capital of Maastricht were we visited the St Peter Fortress. In 1672 the St Peter Hill was used by the French to bombard the city and near the city using the hill's cave system (the rock is used as a building material), so the Estates General ordered a new fortress to be build to protect the city, which went rather well. In 1701 the fortress with a great view on the surrounding landscape and the river Meuse was finished.

It is also possible to visit the cave system itself but it is not possible anymore to go from the caves to the fortress, as some of the corridors have collapsed.

Maastricht has a lot to offer, some of the old city walls are standing there as well, as the first picture shows.

Valentijn Klotz

The editors of this blog aren't just researching the 17th century, fellow editor Mats has set up a blog on the year 1799, the year of the failed invasion of the English and Russians of the Batavian Republic. One of Mats' last posts referred to one of the many image banks of the Province of North-Holland, and a deeper search led me to the 'Provincial Atlas'. In the 17th century section I found the name of the artist Bernard Klotz, (nice picture with it) who was the brother of Valentijn Klotz.

Valentijn was an engineer who was in the service of the States' Army and a good artist as well. Many of his drawings of the forts he visited are preserved, just like pictures of other towns and villages, therefore giving a unique insight in architecture and city life of the 1672 period. More on Valentijn here, and some drawings of Maastricht here. The picture above is of Bar-LeDuc, 1672.

Paardengraf 1632 of 1673? Horses' graveyard found

A video from the Limburg local TV on an excavation of a large horses grave near Maastricht. Could be from the 80-years war or from the siege in 1673.

Cool! A diorama made in Breda, based on a French diorama made after the fall of Maastricht to the French in 1748.

Excellent book with a lot of details on the defence of the Provinces Groningen en Friesland in 1672 and 1673. Also contains info on the garrison in Groningen in 1672.

Voorpost en Pion, J.M.H. Mosmuller, 1995

A thought provocative work on the siege of Maastricht and the following occupation by the French, in the period 1672-1678. Info on garrisons, sieges and a lot of info on politics and diplomacy.

There's the book, Princes, Posts and Partisans, written from a French point of view, and there's this book with a dutch point of view (who is rather mild about the French actually) about daily life under French and/or Munster occupation. Also lists several dutch in Munster military service (for several reasons) and regents 'on the wrong side'.

Officieren in Maastricht ~ Officers in Maastricht

A very nice article here on the living conditions of officers of the garrison town of Maastricht, researched using their archived inventory. A quote from the article:

'The twenty inventories of Maastraicht garrison officers show that we are delaing with a group of people with notable clothing and gear, who were a lot under way. Both elements reflect themselves in the uniforms, the weapons, and travel gear. The great amount of weapons and clothing, show that the captains had to cloth and arm their soldiers.

The picture comes from 1750, and is painted on a prison door.
