Regiment van Beveren II

1.

~
A while ago, we posted an article on the Regiment Uytenhove, which according to an artcle in Mars et Historia took over the colour of the previous colonel, being Colonel van Beveren in 1673.
Picture 1. shows the ensign with the colour, and according to information of mr Dan Schorr, this drawing originates in de the Collection de Ridder in Paris, drawn by the Austrian historian Norbert Robitscheck. Copies are as well to be found in the collection of the Dutch Army Museum.
Colonel van Beveren stems from an old dutch noble family with ties in Flanders as well.
I have found a book on google books, with details on the family and I took a screenshot of the page concerning the Colonel Johan van Beveren, as picture 2. The book also shows the family weapon of the van Beveren family, it's the third on picture 3.
Interesting enough, this weapon is NOT on the colour, except for the obvious beaver (Beveren is dutch for "beaver" plus the suffix -en, which usually denotes a place name).
What's even more interesting is, is a small detour to Germany.

I found a nice Arms and coats book from 1701 with a lot of german families in it. The van Beveren family can be found in Westphalia, Brunswick and there's even a Freiherr of Bevern.
(Pictures 4. 5. and 6.)
Note that on the colour some of the german elemant can be found, like the three oxen, the obvious beaver and the zigzag motive.
Also note that the dutch family van Beveren has no ties with the german one, so how did these german elements show up on the colour? A language mismatch? Cut/paste?..

~
Well, I used to think that coloured drawings didn't exist in the 17th century, but - of course - I was punished for my arrogance, when I browsed the drawings of Josua de Grave on the website of the Rijksmuseum (more piccies here!).
The first picture shows the town of Maatricht in 1670, and gives a rather medieval look of the town. Note the big gabled houses and the huge walls.
The second pic shows a view of the fortress town of Bergen op Zoom, in the (now) Province of Brabant. A more modern view, showing the brick houses with the typical tiles, the flat land around the town, which is representative of the dutch landscapes and townscapes.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Ralph of the inspiring Louis XIV blog hinted me to the image bank of the MMA, a really nice site to browse indeed.
This is a drawing by Mozes ter Borch who also was a dutch marine who fought and died in the succesfull 1667 attack on the English coast. Looks like a fellow marine to me.
Link to the collection..

St Denis 1678

~
On a website of the Belgian Bavarian Society (!) I found a reference to a booklet written by one of it's members, mr F. Samsoen of Mons, Belgium. For the small amount of 15 euro's I aquired a detailed booklet on the battle, with numerous references to Spanish, French, Belgian and Dutch sources. (Which forces me to do even more research..) Unfortunatly the uniform info is about the year 1688, but I have found new info on period Spanish troops and even the cover picture is intruiging! Contact me for further details if you want to aquire the book.
