Nijmegen Stratemakerstoren III

Finally, a print from the Rijksmuseum and a model of the tower from the museum.

Nijmegen Stratemakerstoren II

Wat foto's van het fort zelf...

Some more pics of the inside of the tower and the gun positions.

Nijmegen Stratemakerstoren I

In the town of Nijmegen part of the old fortification of the "Streetbuilders-tower" is restored and there's a small museum in it now, which also gives some attention to the 1672 war. Website of the museum, also in English, is here.

Openluchtmuseum Arnhem III

Het washuis van binnen..

~

The washing house from the inside..
In the big wooden buckets, the pedals driven by a horse in older times, the wash was sort of crushed and on a field next to the house ("Bleekveld") it was left to dry.

Openluchtmuseum Arnhem II

Ook in het Openluchtmuseum: een West-Fries washuis..

~

Another building from the Arnhem Open Air Museum. this is a washing house from the North of the Province of Holland, an area called West-Friesland. The museum is a great inspiration for building and terrain modellers, as you can see, feel (and in this case smell) and touch period houses.

Unfortunatly there aren't many 17th century 25mm buildings with realistic brickwork and as a note to modellers and designers: dutch bricks for houses are and were smaller than in the UK (logically a brick should fit in a man's hand) and HO train scale bricks are quite convincing actually.

Openluchtmuseum Arnhem I

~

A small 17th century house from the province of Guelders, in the Open Air Museum in Arnhem. Note the use of brickwork, framework and wood.

The Open Air Museum is really nice. We went there with the family and kids and all seem to like it. It features a small tram circuit with old an new trams from the 20th century, and several houses and buildings from several ages. Quite fun was the typical 1970's house with brown/orange curtains and the like, but there are medieval farms, and shops as well.

About 38,000 Dutch letters from the second half of the 17th to the early 19th centuries, known as the Prize Papers or the Sailing Letters, have been gathering dust for centuries in British archives. They were sent home by sailors and others from abroad but also vice versa by those staying behind who needed to keep in touch with their loved ones.

The letters did not reach their destinations: they were taken as loot by privateers and confiscated by the High Court of Admiralty during the wars fought between The Netherlands and England. The confiscated letters of men, women and even children allow us to gain access to the as yet mainly unknown everyday Dutch of the past.

3,000 Letters have now been transcribed and digitalized and are online available at www.gekaaptebrieven.nl

Colonel Van Nijvenheim

During our investigations, we found out that local history is still booming. Almost every town and village in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany has a group of enthousiasts studying genealogy and local history, digging up very interesting material and publishing about it.

Whilst looking for more information on one of the sconces near the village of Mook, I stumbled on an article by H.J.M. Spruijt in the magazine "De Grenssteen" (The Mook local history magazine), on one of the Lords of Mook, who turned out to be a Cavalry commander at Ramillies.

It took a while, but he painting of a young Wolther Gottfried of Nijvenheim, is now at City Hall in Mook. The picture above is from the RKD website.
