Neuenhaus DAM

~

The DAM in Marburg is again enlarging it's already immense databse of comtemporary pictures and files, and is worth of a regular visit. In the WHK collection I found a map of the attack of Rabenhaupt in 1674 on Neuenhaus and the high german text is translated as follows:

'names of the Regiments
and the attacks that
before Nieuwenhaus took
place in this order:
His Excel. States General
Lt rabenhaupts regiment on A
Gen Major Schwarzenburg on C
Cpt. Gockingha on B
Cpt. Eijbergen on E
Cpt. Bourmagne on D
The false alarm sounded at F
The two watermills at K
The Feldheuser gate at G
The Dyke gate at F
The Ulfer gate at H
The pallsisades at L

(Who said that sieges were boring?)

Kaas ~ Cheese

Many thanks to the Stedelijk Museum of Alkmaar, for letting me reproduce a picture of the painting 'View on the Weighing Building', dated 1660, unknown artist. It shows the cheese market in Alkmaar with great detail and I really love the way the artist show the people on the market with their traditonial clothing, parts of which survived up to the 20th century. Note the Burgers in the typical Holland black clothes, the capes, the fur hats and the smoking woman.

As a comparison, I show (without permission) some snapshots of an etching by Romeyn de Hooghe from 1674. The full picture can be found here, at the website of the North-Holland Provincial Atlas, and it is quite obvious that Romeyn was heavily 'inspired' by the painting. Again, a lot of detail can be seen on the etch, like the above family, the two soldiers with the typical short sleeved overcoat of the early 1670's and the writing on the building. (It's in Latin and it means 'Courage and power gave the City and People of Alkmaar the right to weigh again'. In the building goods were weighed for trade. This was one of the typical city rights, just like the right to have a market or to transfer goods.)

~

From the collection of Drs C.B. Nicolas, taken from the Dutch National Archive (ARA), three so called ' Staten van Oorlog', from the provinces of Guelders, Friesland and Groningen.

For the sovereign Seven Provinces, defense was of common and national interest. The Council of State had a prominent role in defence matters, and to make a very brief summary things worked like this: the Council, mandated by the all powerfull Estates-General proposed the States a list of troops and their payment, in provincial order. next, the Estates could either agree with the proposal and the lists were published and the provinces had to pay up. Unfortunatly this all sounds rather simple but there were a lot of legal, financial and political complications, which proved rather disasterful in 1672.

Anyway, these texts are a real gold mine for information as each officer is mentioned and his pay. Also the lists remained almost the same during the long lifespan of the Republic.

Of the Groningen list of interest are Frits (that's Dutch for Fritz) van Nassau (Georg Frederik Lodewijk van Nassau Siegen), Osebrandt Rengers, who was unlucky to be a friend of the de Witt family and was accused of treachery, Jonker (local gentry) van der Wenge and a member of the Verrutius family, who served as military in the States' army for several generations.

Also on the list 'traitor' Colonel Wigbold Broersma, who sied with the Bishop, but who's son died under Rabenhaupt in Germany.

Die andere Sonne ~ 'The Other Sun King'

This PhD dissertation on the 'Other Sun', Emperor Leopold of the Holy Roman Empire, deals with the media image, propaganda and press during his reign. For me it was interesting because it contained a chapter on the german reaction on the battles of Sinsheim and Seneffe, which turned out to be a rather sceptic one, as the papers didn't believe the messages from Paris or The Hague first hand. Too bad the pamhplets themselved aren't printed in the book which makes it a rather tedious read.

Above in italics a short review by the Suddeutsche Zeiting.

Valentijn Klotz

The editors of this blog aren't just researching the 17th century, fellow editor Mats has set up a blog on the year 1799, the year of the failed invasion of the English and Russians of the Batavian Republic. One of Mats' last posts referred to one of the many image banks of the Province of North-Holland, and a deeper search led me to the 'Provincial Atlas'. In the 17th century section I found the name of the artist Bernard Klotz, (nice picture with it) who was the brother of Valentijn Klotz.

Valentijn was an engineer who was in the service of the States' Army and a good artist as well. Many of his drawings of the forts he visited are preserved, just like pictures of other towns and villages, therefore giving a unique insight in architecture and city life of the 1672 period. More on Valentijn here, and some drawings of Maastricht here. The picture above is of Bar-LeDuc, 1672.

Amsterdam Canal Project

Last Saturday the editors of this blog, together with one of the bosses of the WD3 forum, left for Antwerp, for the TSOA Miniature Fair 'Crisis'.

We all had a great time there, lots to be seen, but this time no late 17th century stuff. Well..that's not quite true as we met Mr Ger Boom again, who started a range of 17th century building front, which you can see on this page, also check out Gerard Boom's main page for other goodies.

Well, it took a while before I found some info on the Spanish, and it isn't much, but enough to honour them, and as today is the day that king Charles II of Spain was born (!), the above pamphlet.

The editors of the Rampjaar blog are always on the lookout for relevant information on the year 1672. Whilst looking for information on government orders from the Province of Groningen ('Stad en Lande' as it was called then) I found an article on tax collectors houses on the website of the Windmill 'De liefde'. ('Love'). Click on the left side bar 'de sarrieshuizen', a new article appears and you can click the 'English version'.

These small typical buildings were built according Government lines, and could be seen all over the Province and would make great material for your diorama or wargame table. An article with relevant archival material can be found in the dutch text, called 'Tien bestekken van chercherswoningen'.
